Part of Europe and an enlarged Africa complete the geography complimented by an elaborate title cartouche.  The map is rated Very Good with a small worm hole noted that has been repaired just off the coast of Africa.  A small repair is also noted in the distance scale at lower right.  The map measures approximately  (8.8" x 5.8" - 22.4 x 14.8 cm).      $340.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

The map is perhaps the most important cartographic issue of New York produced for the Revolutionary War period.  It is one of the most detailed and accurate maps made for the British to aid in their various campaigns in New England.  Unlike most of the mapping made up to that time; this map was complied from original surveys made in 1769 by Captain John Montresor.  Inscribed on the map 'To The Right Honorable Sir Jeffrey Amherst, Knight of the Bath and Lieutenant General of His Majesty's Forces ...'  Of note is the Land Grants of eastern New York and southern Connecticut.   The first state of the map included inserts of White Hills, Connecticut  and Lake Champlain.  The map was originally published in four sheets in two.  This offering is the lower right or bottom  sheet of the two eastern sections of the map covering part of eastern New York and southern Connecticut as well as Long Island and the Hamptons.  Printed on heavy paper the map is in light contemporary wash colors and is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with only normal age toning and a small damp spot located just below the title block on the right side.     $ 1150.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

120.13 Virginiae partis australis, et Floridae partis orientalis, 1671, by Arnoldus Montanus, London

This beautiful and detailed map of the Southeast United States shows the French and English claims in the region marked with their respective coats of arms.  The cartography in the southern part of the map retains Le Moyne's three imaginary lakes, the largest of which drains through the Carolinas via the May River.  This cartographic error, first appeared in Hondius' version of 1606, and was accepted by most cartographers.  While the map is  nearly identical to the Blaeu / Jansson printing on which this map is based, the embellishments are entirely original.  The map extends from the Chesapeake Bay in the north to the Carolinas in the south.  The title cartouche is engraved onto a buffalo hide displayed by two Native Americans and at the top is a large view that illustrates a group of indigenous natives panning for gold.   The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with one 10.3 cm tear just above the title cartouche that has been professionally repaired with Japanese paper.  The sharp impression measures approximately (14.0" x 11.4" - 35.6 x 29.0 cm).    $1650.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

A detailed and interesting rare copy of Jefferys’ late eighteenth century chart containing three well described areas: Florida, the Gulf coast just past the mouth of the Mississippi and the Bahamas; each with soundings and navigational information. Two of the  charts were made during surveys by Captain William Fuller, who dedicated them to John Earl of Egmont.   The charts general display was taken from information found in William Gerard De Brahm’s important  Map of South Carolina & Georgia (1754) which arguably was the most comprehensive map of the region at that time.  The details of the chart is expressed with the “New Town” on Amelia Island and a note on the abandoned Fort William, Cumberland Island.  The river features numerous depth soundings and the locations of the shifting shoals.  There is an insert at the top right of the entrance to St. Marys River.  The map is rated Excellent (see our rating criteria on the Home Page) printed on heavy chart paper with no apparent flaws noted.  It measures approximately (24.o” x 20.0"  - 61.0 x 50.8 cm).     $5600.    [$10.50 shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.]

120.16 “The Coast of West Florida and Louisiana / “The Peninsula and the Gulf of Florida or Channel of Bahama with the Bahama Islands”, by Thomas Jefferys, February 20, 1775, London

This rare and fine printing; a large sea chart covering the Gulf coast from Cabo del Norte, Louisiana, through Florida to the Bahamas was prepared by Sayer in London.  Jefferys, Geographer to George III, compiled and produced some of the most prestigious maps of North America in the eighteenth century including this rendering.  This edition is one of the most important naval charts made of Florida for the times.  The hydrographic detail of the coastline and the channels in the Bahamas is exceptional and it remained the standard for sailing the Florida coasts until the latter part of the 18th century.  The detailed information is primarily of the coastline with harbors, inlets, bays, entrances, and currents carefully noted.  In addition to what has been mentioned; major landmarks and settlements are noted, as are sailing routes.   At this time Florida was relatively unexplored, yet the data for the coastal sections is significant.  Anchorages are also noted as well as rhumb lines and an ornate compass rose. While the area depicted was not of significance during the American Revolution, this chart is still the preeminent rendering for the period.  The chart is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with a bold impression and two very tiny pinholes in the engraved portion.  It measures approximately (48.3" x 18.8" - 122.7 x 47.8 cm)   $4300.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.)

120.18 Carte de la Californie et des Pays Nord-Quest, ca 1779, by Robert de Vaugondy - D. Diderot, Paris

Published in Diderot's Encyclopedie which contained ten maps of America, Asia, and the Arctic Regions; this map shows two earlier maps adopted by de Vaugondy.  One of the west coast of North America, the first after Visscher's map of 1612  and the second afer Plantus' World map.  Both show the Straits of Anian, Quivera and Baja California and neither has anything recognizable apart from several of the cartographic myths of the 17th and early 18th centuries.  Diderot's map was one of the first surveys of comparative cartography tackling a number of the misconceptions of the west coast of North America.  The map is rated Very Good, with a small repair on the verso affecting the right and lower margins; in pastel color [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] it measures approximately (14.5" x 11.5"  - 36.9 x 29.3 cm).    $230.  ($10.50 Shipping / Handling / Ins.)

The sheet contains two maps: Jamaica above and Bermuda below.  Prepared to show the plantations; denoting those that grow sugar, cotton, and indigo.  The map of Bermuda includes an interesting cartographic error resulting from the copying of John Speed's map of 1627.  In that map, Bermuda was superimposed over a map of the coastline of New England and Virginia to portray the relative position of Bermuda.  The coastlines of this map are gone, but the small depiction of an  additional Bermuda remains, which appears on this map as a small offshore island named Bermudos located just north of the island.  The map has some light foxing with later color and rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page].  It measures approximately (10.5" x 8.0"  - 26.7 x 20.4 cm).      $465.  ($10.50 shipping / handling /ins.)

This map is one of the classics in American cartography and one of the rarest of the southern frontier.  The first edition of  William De Brahm’s extraordinary map of the coast of South Carolina and Georgia engraved by Jefferys.  De  Brahm (1717 - 1799) was a military engineer from Coblenz.  He traveled to Georgia with a group of German emigrants in 1751.  He was appointed  surveyor of Georgia in 1754 and then in 1764 appointed Surveyor-General of the Southern District of North America; in part because of this impressive edition.  William Gerard De Brahm also designed fortifications for Charles Town and Fort Loudoun in support of the concerns of the British government because of  French excursions.  This map represents a major contribution to the mapping of the southeast.  It was originally in four sheets.  Now joined,  the map is presently in two sections.  Once joined and framed,  the extended margins have been carefully removed and preserved so as to allow re-attachment at some future time.  The map is embellished with an ornate title cartouche showing indigo production.  In original hand coloring and laid on heavy chart paper, the map is rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page]  and measures approximately  (53" x 47.5" - 135 x 121 cm, when joined).    $45,000     ($26.50 shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.)

440.30 Lake Michigan, Wisconsin - Milwaukee Harbor of Refuge from Surveys to 1893, by the U. S. Lake Survey, Army Corps of Engineers, Washington, D.C.

This is an original copperplate engraving with detailed topographic features showing Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Lake Michigan at the end of the 19th century.  Among the most sought after cartographic items is the original copperplate engravings used to print the maps of centuries ago.  It is unusual that this type of artifact survived. When the map or chart was issued, the engraving plate was usually no longer kept.  This was particularly the case for U. S. map production.  The printing plates were either revised by hammering out old information and new data engraved in its place or the plate was used to produce a new one.  This rare find includes a distance scale and remarks about the field work of that region by the U. S. Lake Survey, an agency that no longer exists.  The plate has been lacquered to protect the soft incised lines.  Measuring approximately (10.5" x 14.0"  - 27 x 35.5 cm) the plate is in remarkably good condition.  Each of the corners have been drilled where it apparently had been displayed at one time.             $536.   ($23.50 shipping via FedEx / USPS  - Intel shipping addnl.)    Sale Price:  $210
