Aa published the monumental Gallerie Agreeable du Monde

63 contained this splendid map of the southern United
States. The map was based on De Lisle’s influential
Carte du Mexique de la Florida of 1703. Filled with
geographic detail of early colonial settlements and Indian

120.08 De Graaf van
Cumberlands Verscheyde Reysen na de Kusten van Africa na Porto Rico en
anderen Gewesten van America, c1700, by Pieter van der Aa, Amsterdam
 |
The map shows the
track lines of the privateering voyage of George
Gifford, the Earl of Cumberland, in 1598. Cumberland
traveled to Puerto Rico where he led an attack on the city
and succeeded in briefly capturing Fort San Felipe del Morro
(El Morro). This was the only time that the fort was taken
in battle. However, dysentery of the crew forced the
English to retreat after six weeks of occupation. The
map depicts the northeast section of North America and a
very enlarged St. Lawrence River ending in one massive,
open-ended lake. South America is shown with the
fictional lake Parime
on the Equator. Part of Europe and an enlarged Africa
complete the geography complimented by an elaborate title
cartouche. The map is rated Very Good with a small
worm hole noted that has been repaired just off the coast of
Africa. A small repair is also noted in the distance
scale at lower right. The map measures approximately
(8.8" x 5.8" - 22.4 x 14.8 cm).

120.09 Carte
Des Nouvelles Decouvertes Au Nord de la Mer Du Sud, Tant a l’Est
de la Siberie et Du Kamtchatka, Qua l’Quest de la Nouvelle
France, c1770, by Paolo Santini, Venice
 |
This map
introduced some of the most influential and fictional
cartographic data concerning the Pacific Northwest. It is
considered a pivotal change in what is now the region that
was described with such features as the Sea of the West.
Santini’s map was taken from Joseph-Nicolas De L’Ile’s and
Philippe Buache’s map of the Northern Pacific Ocean. The
map includes Asia - 1752 and shows the Russian discoveries
and the de forte voyage, both of which were criticized for
incorrectly representing Vitus Bering’s voyage as well as
not showing de Forte’s text when depicting the voyage. The
Sea of the West (De lIsle / Buache) was based on
speculations made by Juan de Fuca during his 1592 voyage of
discovery. The dramatic lay of the map illustrating the
northwest coast of America (mostly based on myth),
nevertheless dominated regional cartography for many decades
until Cook’s voyages. The map is rated Excellent [see our
rating criteria on the Home Page] with no apparent flaws and
a string and dark later color impression. The map measures
approximately (25.3" x 18.5"). $2,400. ($10.50

Coronelli’s robust style is this rendering centered on the

Central America and the northern portions of South America
with North Africa on the opposite side of the Atlantic.
Included in the North Atlantic is Spain, portion of France,
and Great Britain. The northern extremities also include
Iceland and Greenland. An elaborate title cartouche
completes the map; without color as originally issued.
Printed on heavy paper, the map is rated Very Good with some
foxing and damp stains to the left border not affecting the

120.11 A Map
of the Province of New York, with part of Pensilvania, and New
England, from an actual survey by Capt Montresor, engineer 1775
- 1777; ca 1777, by Andrew Dury, London
 |
The map
is perhaps the most important cartographic issue of New York
produced for the Revolutionary War period. It is one of the
most detailed and accurate maps made for the British to aid
in their various campaigns in New England. Unlike most of
the mapping made up to that time; this map was complied from
original surveys made in 1769 by Captain John Montresor.
Inscribed on the map “To The Right Honorable Sir Jeffrey
Amherst, Knight of the Bath and Lieutenant General of His
Majesty’s Forces ...” Of note is the Land Grants of
eastern New York and southern Connecticut. The first state
of the map included inserts of White Hills, Connecticut and
Lake Champlain. The map was originally published in four
sheets in two. This offering is the lower right or bottom
sheet of the two eastern sections of the map covering part
of eastern New York and southern Connecticut as well as Long
Island and the Hamptons. Printed on heavy paper the map is
in light contemporary wash colors and is rated Very Good
[see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with only normal
age toning and a small damp spot located just below the
title block on the right side. $ 2800. ($10.50

120.12 Nova
Orbis sive America Septentrionalis, divisa per sua Regna Provinc
...., 1744, by Tobias Lotter, Augsburg
 |
A beautiful and
rare first edition with the imprint “Jm Verlag bey I.M. Will
Kunstv: in Agsburg” at the bottom center and shows
California as an island; from the second issue by Sanson,
depicting two bays on the north end of the “island”. Of
note with this map of America is the rather slender shape
of California. The map’s geographic data is heavy with
place names and the northern extremes noticeably elongated.
The impressive title cartouche depicts indigenous natives
and animals to include two bar scales. The hand colored
map reflects Lotter’s strong engraving style and vivid color
accent. The map is rated Very Good, with a fine impression
and the borders cut close, as issued measuring
approximately (10.0" x 7.5" - 25.4 x 19.1 cm). $895.

Virginiae partis australis, et Floridae partis orientalis, 1671,
by Arnoldus Montanus, London
 |
This
beautiful and detailed map of the Southeast United States
shows the French and English claims in the region marked
with their respective coats of arms. The cartography in the
southern part of the map retains Le Moyne’s three imaginary
lakes, the largest of which drains through the Carolinas via
the May River. This cartographic error, first appeared in
Hondius’ version of 1606, and was accepted by most
cartographers. While the map is nearly identical to the
Blaeu / Jansson printing on which this map is based, the
embellishments are entirely original. The map extends from
the Chesapeake Bay in the north to the Carolinas in the
south. The title cartouche is engraved onto a buffalo hide
displayed by two Native Americans and at the top is a large
view that illustrates a group of indigenous natives panning
for gold. The map is rated Very Good [see our rating
criteria on the Home Page] with one 10.3 cm tear just above
the title cartouche that has been professionally repaired
with Japanese paper. The sharp impression measures
approximately (14.0" x 11.4" - 35.6 x 29.0 cm).

sheet] La Bermude aux Anglois, 1767, by Jean-Baptiste Crepy,
Paris
|
 |
The sheet
contains two maps: Jamaica above and Bermuda below.
Prepared to show the plantations; denoting those that grow
sugar, cotton, and indigo. The map of Bermuda includes an
interesting cartographic error resulting from the copying of
John Speed’s map of 1627. In that map, Bermuda was
superimposed over a map of the coastline of New England and
Virginia to portray the relative position of Bermuda. The
coastlines of this map are gone, but the small depiction of
an additional Bermuda remains, which appears on this map as
a small offshore island named Bermudos located just
north of the island. The map has some light foxing with
later color and rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on

The
original plan of the Federal City as envisioned by Pierre Charles L’Enfant rests in the
Library of Congress. In May of 1887 the U.S. Coast & Geodetic
Survey was charged with the task of copying the original
manuscript and making available reproductions for use in land
disputes and other legal aspects relating to the territory of
the District of Columbia and other national survey matters.
The plan remained in the custody of the agency (record file
#1290) until it was transferred in 1918. Copies of the Plan
were sold by the USC&GS (map #3035a) from 1893 until 1991.
Several variations were made by the agency including adding
color in 1958. This particular copy was one that was issued
in 1976 as part of the American Bicentennial celebration of
the Nation. The color print includes a report prepared by
B.A. Colonna, Assistant in Charge,
