800.02 Iaponia, c1595, by
Gerard Mercator & H. Hondius, Amsterdam
 |
One of the
earliest of the European maps of Japan and one of the most
attractive. Mercator’s elegant calligraphy is apparent with
this offering. Mercator like Ortelius used the map of the
Portuguese Jesuit, Teixiera, as his base map. Mercator,
however, replaced one of Ortelius’ ships with a Japanese
junk and a notation describing the vessels unique
qualities. Additionally, Mercator has added a legend in the
island of Korea dealing with the Koreans at war. Also, in
this edition Mercator re-designed both cartouches with his
characteristic strapwork style. The map is rated Excellent
[see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with only normal
age toning noted. It measures approximately (13.7 “ x
17.7" - 44.8 x 35.5 cm). $3200. ($10.50 shipping
