A lovely birds-eye view of the fortified city of Basel, Switzerland.  Great detail includes streets, towers, churches and buildings on both sides of the Rhine.  Two legends locate 42 buildings; one in the upper left and lower left of the map.  The crest of the city is located in the upper right.  In original color, the map is rated Very Good with no apparent flaws and measures approximately (14.0" x 10.6"  - 35.6 x 27.0 cm).      $430.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

A very detailed and beautiful map of ancient Greece that is based on Nicolas Sanson’s work.  The map includes Crete and the smaller islands; Asia Minor and the Turkish coast are depicted. A great deal of geographic information is provided with place names, villages as well as the topography.  A very prominent title cartouche and a pair of distance sales complete the map whose condition is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page].  The map measures approximately (21.5" x 19.1"  - 54.7 x 48.4 cm).    $225.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)    ***SOLD***

520.13 Carpetaniae Partis Descr. 1584 / Vardulorum, sive Guipuscoae Regionis Typus / Cadiz urbs, Hanc Insulam Perlustrabat, et Sua Manu Depingbat Georgius Hoefnaglius ..., 1587, by Abraham Ortelius, Antwerp

 

This unusual cartographic compilation shows three maps elegantly arranged into one folio sheet.  The semicircular map of Cadiz is taken from a manuscript map drawn by George Hoefnagel during his stay (1563-1567) in the region.  The Carpetaniae map is very accurate but from an unknown source.  The source of the Guipuscae map is also unknown, but de Jode did publish it in 1578.  The map is rated Very Good with only a damp stain in the blank margin [see our rating criteria on the Home Page].  There is French text on the verso and it measures approximately (19.2" x 15.4").     $562.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)      

520.14          Udrone Irlandiae in Catheragh Baronia, c1639, by Gerard Mercator /  J. Hondius, Amsterdam

 

The map depicts the present-day county of Carlow in Leinster providence and Catherlaugh (now Carlow).  A title cartouche topped with calipers and a distance scale beautifies the map.  Signed in the lower right corner Per Gerardum Mercatorem cum Privilegio.  The map is from Mercator’s atlas Cosmographicae.  In 1604 Jodocus Hondius bought the printing plates from the Mercator family and with his son, Jodocus II and Henricus; published the enlarged editions of the Mercator atlas which dominated the map publishing market for the next thirty years.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with only normal age toning and measures approximately (13.5" x 11.1").       $340.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

520.16 Udrone Irlandiae in Catherlagh Baronia , c 1606, by G. Mercator / J. Hondius, Amsterdam

 

This early 17th century map of Ireland depicts County Carlow in the Leinster Province & Catherlaugh (which is now Carlow).  The title is surrounded by a strapwork cartouche with a calipers and distance scale atop.  The map is signed in the lower right “Per Gerardum Mercatorem Cum Privilegio”.   Mercator’s sons and grandsons were all cartographers / publishers and made their contributions in various way with the business.  Rumold, in particular, was responsible for the Mercator Atlas of 1595.  The map plates were bought in 1604 by Jodocus Hondius who, with his sons, Jodocus II and Henricus; published later editions of the atlas that included this plate.  The map is rated Very Good, with only normal age toning and measures approximately (10.9" x 13.4").  $320.   ($10.50 shipping /handling / ins.)

From the Nouvel Atlas published by Fortin, the map is printed on heavy paper in original outline color.  Rated Excellent (see our rating criteria on the Home Page) no apparent flaws and measures about  (9.5" x 11.5"  - 24 x 29 cm).      $190.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins)  

520.18 Novissima et Accuratissima Totius Angliae, SCOTIAE et Hiberniae Tabula .............., c1685, by Theodore Danckerts, Amsterdam

 

Original color, the map covers England and Scotland and the environs with a beautiful title cartouche that features the shields of Scotland, Ireland and England held by putti.  From the atlas Regni Scicilae et Insulae Maltae et Gozoe - 1695.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with top and bottom margins cut close to the neatline and some toning of the paper noted.  It measures approximately (19.5" x 22.5"  - 50 x 57 cm).   $950.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)  

520.19 Ghent a large City and Castle in Flanders, twice taken by ye Duke of Marlborough Viz in ye Year 1706 & 1708, c1750, by Nicholas Tindal, London

 

A very fine bird’s-eye plan of the city and fortification of Ghent and the surrounding countryside.  The map includes a decorative title cartouche that encapsulates a key to the features of the map that include castles, churches, markets, batteries and government buildings.  Taken from Rapin’s History of England, the map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with a slight separation at the fold mark affecting the print at the bottom center.  It measures approximately (18.5" x 14.2'  - 47.0 x 36.1 cm).       $277.     ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)                

520.21    Frugiferi ac ameni Herefordiae Comitatus qui olim pars suit Silurum delineatio, c1607, by Christopher Saxton, London

 

Christopher Saxton became known as the “father of English cartography”.  During his career he carried out extensive surveys of England and Wales between 1573 and 1578.  This map of the Hereford area is typical of Saxton’s style with tress, mountains, and towns depicted.  The enchantingly-named Gilden Vale is shown in the southwestern portion of the map. A detailed title cartouche and the coat-of-arms of England is depicted in the upper right corner.  It is believed that this map was published by the son Robert Saxton after his fathers death in 1610.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with some loss of paper noted in the upper left of the margin and repairs made thereto; not affecting the map.  The map measures approximately (12.3" x 11.3"  - 31.3 x 28.6 cm).   $290.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)               

520.22 Peloponnesus nunc Morea, 1697, by Philipp Cluver, Leiden

 

A small and very interesting map of Greece featuring the Peloponnesian peninsula.  The cities of Sparta and Olympia are shown.  An intricate title cartouche with Neptune and his entourage embellishes the lower right side of the map.  In later color, the map is rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with no apparent flaws and measures approximately (10.1" x 82.”  -  25.4 x 20.9 cm).          $125.    ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)      

520.23 Warwicum Northhamtonia, Huntingdonia, Cantabrigia ..., c 1630, by Gerard Mercator / J. Hondius, Amsterdam

 

A beautiful map of south-eastern England to include London, Salisbury, Oxford, Cambridge, Leicester and Norwich; as well as the Isle of Wight.  Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in Flanders and studied in Louvain under Gemma Frisus; Dutch writer and mathematician.  His work was revered by many including Charles V.  After his death in 1594 his sons and grandsons continued the business.  In 1604 Jodocus Hondius bought the printing plates from the Mercator family and continued the publication of the maps.   An elaborate strapwork title cartouche and a scale in the lower right section completes the map.  Rated Very Good, the map has [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] a good and dark impression and the paper slightly age toned.  Measuring approximately (14.4" x 18.4"  - 36.5 x 46.7 cm) it  is a fine example of Mercator’s work.        $310.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

A small but detailed map of ancient Sicily based largely on the work of Ortelius and Gastaldi.  Engraved by Petrus Kaerius, in original color and with a strapwork title cartouche.  The map is rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home page] with no apparent flaws and measures approximately (8.1" x 6.0"  - 20.4 x 15.3 cm).    $250.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

520.29 Brabant, c1740, by Johnann Baptist Homann, Nurnberg

 

The Homann family became the most important publishers of atlases in Germany during the 18th century.  This map, in original color, of Brabant shows the regions of Louvain, Brussels, Antwerp, Hertogenbosch and Breda.  A detailed title cartouche completes the map which is rated Excellent, with no apparent flaws, printed on heavy paper, and measures approximately (22" x 19.1" - 58.0 x 48.5 cm)        $190.  ($10.50 shipping /handling/ ins.)      

520.30 A New & Accurate Map of the Netherlands or Low Countries ...., c1746, by Emanuel Bowen, London

 

A very detailed copperplate engraving of the Low Countries with good detail of the towns, roads and waterways.  Indicated are the Barrier Towns as designated by the Barrier Treaty of 1715.  A  detailed title cartouche featuring soldiers and weaponry completes the map which has later color.  The map is rated Very Good (see our rating criteria on the Home Page) with no apparent flaws noted.  It measures approximately (17.2" x 14.1").     $380.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)          

520.31 A Map of the Kingdom of Denmark with Duchy of Holstein, 1790, by William Faden, London

 

A large-scale map with good geographic and topographic detail.  Towns, roads, waterways and ferryboat routes are depicted.  An elaborate title cartouche and distance scales complete this work of William Faden, who produced the first Ordnance Survey map and  whose publications continued from the business began by Thomas Jefferys in 1771.  The map is rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] printed on heavy paper with only a very light bit of toning at the centerfold.          $320.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)    ***SOLD***

520.37 Magni Principatus, cue Provinciae Regni Sueciae, FINNLANDIAE, mappa Genralis Geographica, 1789, by Johann Baptist Homann (Homann Heirs), Nuremberg

 

A fine example of the Homann family of publishers.  In original outline color, the map includes a scale in the upper left corner and in the lower right corner a description by symbol of prominent features.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with only normal age toning and measures approximately (17.5" x 17.5"  - 44 x 44 cm).    $300   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)        

520.38 Gallia, c1609, by Gerard Mercator, Amsterdam

 

The map is the folio edition with French text on the verso.  In outline color, there is an elaborate title cartouche as well as sailing ships and a sea monster in the ocean regions.  A royal French coat-of-arms completes the depiction.  The map is rated Very Good with one 2 cm paper thinning area noted near the left center.  It measures approximately (14.5" x 16.5"  - 37 x 42 cm).        $650   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

A beautiful map of southern Norway in original color.  A detailed title cartouche is complemented by the Royal Crown coat-of-arms, sailing ships, compass rose and a distance scale.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with a good and dark impression, some age toning noted.  The map measures approximately (15.5" x 19.5"  - 40 x 50 cm).     $850      ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

The map encompasses all of northern Italy and includes the Gulf of Venice.  In original outline color, the map has an elaborate title cartouche with putti within the border and in fill color.  It  is rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with no apparent flaws noted.  The map measures approximately 19.1" x 23.5"  - 48 x 60 cm)           $700    ($10.50 shipping / handling /ins.)                      

521.03 De Bello Belgico Decas Prina Famian Stradae Rom. Soc leu Edition III, c1648, by Famiano Strada, Italy

 

Strada was a teacher at the Collegium Romanum in Rome, author of a book on the Dutch War of Independence (De Bello Belgico) 1632, when first published it contained the Leo Belgicus [map of Belgium in the form of a lion].   The second part of the book was published in 1647, the two together in 1651.  It was, however, that only the Dutch and Latin editions contained the Leo Belgicus as the title page.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] there are  no apparent flaws and measures approximately (3.8" x 5.7"  - 9.7 x 14.5 cm).           $1100.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)      

521.04 Uranico Europaeum Astroscopium Orbis Europaeo Sacrum Erhardi Weiglij Mathem Prof P. Jena, c1682, by Erhard Weigel, Jena

 

This cartographic curiosity superimposes Europe onto a double-headed eagle of the Holy Roman Empire.  The constellations are represented by coat-of-arms of European princes in the heraldic heavens.  Spheres above and below the distorted oval projection include details of the northern and southern polar skies.  Weigel was a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Jena, globe maker, and astrologer.   This rare copy is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with note that the top margin is cut close but does not affect the map, which measures approximately (12.5" x 14.5" - 31 x 36.5 cm).       $3,500.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins)     ***SOLD***

This famous cartographic allegorical map, the “fools cap”, relates to the island of fools. Text on a large page of copy with the  map  (11.5" x 9.5" - 29 x 23 cm)  wide margins, the condition is Very Good.       $780.        ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

First published in Vol. I of Le Theatare du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas contenant les chartes et descriptions de tous les Pais de la terre, Mis en lumiere Par Guillaume et Jean Blaeu .... 1638.  The map of Frankfurt and its environs is surrounded by a magnificent border of allegorical figures and 35 coats of arms of the Frankfurt magistrates.  This is undoubtably the most elaborate of the maps in the Blaeu atlas.  The map measures approximately (21.7" x 17.9" - 55.0 x 45.5 cm) and is rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page].  Plate # 109, blank on the verso.        $2300.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)   

570.03      Carte d’Europe, 1772, by Guillaume de L’Isle & Philippe Buache,, Paris

An unusual map by De L’Isle of Europe with an insert of Nova Zembla and text within the title cartouche by Buache that is dated 1724.  Philippe Buache was one of the most active proponents of the school of theoretical cartography during the mid 18th century.  In original colors, the map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with a good dark impression and only minor water stains in the margin, not affecting the map which measures approximately (19.5" x  24.2") accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.  $325.   ($10.50 shipping / handling ins.)

570.04 Ducatus Meklenburgici Tabula Generalis continens Duc. Vandaliae et Meklenburg....., 1716, by Johann Baptist Homann, Nuremberg

A bright and very attractive map of the northeast coast of Germany, showing Lubeck and  farther down the left side is Lauenburg.  In the upper right corner of the map is Rugen.  At the bottom center is Wittenberg and in the lower right is Strasburg.  A very detailed title cartouche decorated with cherubs at the top center of the map and sailing ships complete this beautiful map by Homann.  The map is rated Excellent with no apparent flaws in bright original color.  It measures approximately (22.8" x 19.4"  - 58.0 x 49.3 cm)       $386.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

A very detailed map of France from the surveys of Rizzi-Zannoni.  Embellished with elaborate title and distance scale cartouches.  Additional Latin text above the top border.  The map is rated Very Good with several light spots noted and an old repair in the bottom margin outside the neatline, not affecting the map which measures approximately (22.1" x 17.4").    $361.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

570.06 Le Gouvernement de Calais & Pais reconquis, c1640, by Jan Jansson, Amsterdam

An attractive map of the northwestern sections of France including the towns of Calais and Gravelines. Two elaborate title cartouches embellish the map with sailing ships in the coastal waters.  The map is rated Very Good with only slight age toning to the paper and Japanese paper re-enforcement at the center fold.  The map measures approximately (19.9" x 15.8") with a Certificate of Authenticity.         $312.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

570.07 Das Wifispurgergou (Switzerland), 1631, by Mercator / Jansson, Amsterdam

This is the reduced version of Mercator map of southwest Switzerland, showing Geneva, Lake Geneva, Lake Biel, Bern, Freiburg and Lake Thuner among others.  From the Atlas Minor map is in original color and rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with no apparent flaws and German text on the verso.  The map measures approximately (7.3" x 5.5"  - 18.6 x 14.0 cm).      $130.
