of Portugal with north oriented to the right. Based on the
work of Fernando Alvarez Secco, a Portuguese mapmaker whose
rendering of the map was used by various publishers until
the end of the 17th century. Embellished with
numerous graphic subjects such as ships, coats-of -arms, two
compass roses and Neptune astride a sea monster; the map is
a fine example of that periods cartographic work. Printed
on heavy laid paper, the map is rated Very Good [see our

at the bottom right, well away from the map and the left and
right margin are cut close to the neatlines. The map

This
unusual cartographic and beautiful compilation shows the Bay
of Cadiz, including a plan of Cadiz as well as the
surrounding regions. The map was taken from a manuscript
map drawn by George Hoefinagel during his stay (1563-67) in
the region. The Caretaniae map was very accurate but from
an unknown source. The two smaller maps, upper left / upper
right; depict the Tagus River from Toledo extending North
and East to Morata, Cinchon and Colmenar. The second insert
shows San Sebastian and Deva. Sailing ships, four
cartouches and the strapwork embellishments complete this
dark impression. The map is rated Very Good with only a
damp stain noted in the blank margin, left side. The verso
contains French text and the map measures approximately

The map
depicts present day County Carlow in Leinster Province and
Catherlaugh which is now Carlow. The title is surrounded by
a strapwork design cartouche topped with a caliper and a
distance scale. Noted in the lower right corner 'Per
Gerardum Mercatorem Cum Privilegio' identifying the work.
The map is from Mercator's atlas Cosmographicae. In
1604 Jodocus Hondius bought the printing plates from the
Mercator family and with his son Jodocus II and Henricus,
published the enlarged editions of the Mercator atlas of
which this map is one of the plates. The Mercator atlas
dominated the map publishing market for the next thirty

scales that include the Royal coat-of-arms, unicorn, and a

A copperplate
engraving in original color with a blank cartouche at the
lower left. This map, with van den Keere's signature;
first appeared in Jansson's Atlas Maioris Appendix of
1630. The map again appeared in later editions of the
Mercator - Hondius atlases with verso text. Whereas this
edition is blank on the verso. Covens & Mortier obtained
the plate much later bearing the imprint: Amstelodami
Typus Gerardi Valk et Petri Schenk. This printing by
Keere has an 'IX' in the upper right of the image. Keere
was an engraver, globe maker and bookseller. Born in Ghent,
he was trained by Jodocus Hondius, his brother-in-law. The

Christopher
Saxton became known as the 'father of English cartography'.
During his career he carried out extensive surveys of
England and Wales between 1573 and 1578. This map of the
Hereford area is typical of Saxton's style with tress,
mountains, and towns depicted. The enchantingly-named
Gilden Vale is shown in the southwestern portion of the
map. A detailed title cartouche and the coat-of-arms of
England is depicted in the upper right corner. It is
believed that this map was published by the son Robert
Saxton after his fathers death in 1610. The map is rated

soldiers, allegorical figures, Roman guards and weaponry

royal coat-of-arms of both Scotland and Britain. The title
cartouche is flanked by the mythical figure of Mercury and

abound in various locations of the map produced by
Visscher's son sometime after 1650. The map is rated Very

information is provided that shows counties, towns,
waterways, and islands such as the Isle of Man. The
political boundaries are grouped into the seven ancient
Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. An insert at the top right within a
decorative cartouche portrays the whole of the British Isles
