A lovely birds-eye view of the fortified city of Basel, Switzerland.  Great detail includes streets, towers, churches and buildings on both sides of the Rhine.  Two legends locate 42 buildings; one in the upper left and lower left of the map.  The crest of the city is located in the upper right.  In original color, the map is rated Very Good with no apparent flaws and measures approximately (14.0" x 10.6"  - 35.6 x 27.0 cm).      $430.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.) 

520.12      Europa Virgo [Europe in the form of a woman],   ca 1550, by Sebastian Munster, Basel

 

From the Comographia one of the most famous of cartographic oddities; showing Europe in the shape of a woman.  The representation of Europa Regina or Queen of the World was first drawn by Jonannes Bucius in 1537.  This simplified version appeared in several editions of Munster’s Comographia starting in about 1580.  The continent, with west at the top; and has Spain forming the crown and head.  France and Germany within the neck and bust, Italy the right arm and Denmark the left arm.  The scepter with Britain as the flag and the gowen with the remaining countries of Europe.  Asia is scene below the gowen.  Some cartographic historians claim that it is not a women but rather Charles V of Spain.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with two small worm holes noted outside the neatline of the woodcut print not affecting the image.  Measuring approximately (6.5" x 10.0"  - 16.6 x 25.4 cm) the map has later color, text on the verso.    $1100.    ($ 10.50 shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.)      Sale Price:  $850

520.13 Carpetaniae Partis Descr [Bay of Cadiz] 1584 / Vardulorum, sive Guipuscoae Regionis Typus / Cadiz, Hanc Insulam Perlustrabat, et Sua Manu Depingbat ........, published 1587, by Abraham Ortelius, Antwerp

 

This unusual cartographic and beautiful compilation shows the Bay of Cadiz, including a plan of Cadiz as well as the surrounding regions.  The map was taken from a manuscript map drawn by George Hoefinagel during his stay (1563-67) in the region.  The Caretaniae map was very accurate but from an unknown source.  The two smaller maps, upper left / upper right; depict the Tagus River from Toledo extending North and East to Morata, Cinchon and Colmenar.  The second insert shows San Sebastian and Deva.  Sailing ships, four cartouches and the strapwork embellishments complete this dark impression.  The map is rated Very Good with only a damp stain noted in the blank margin, left side.  The verso contains French text and the map measures approximately (19.2" x 15.4").     $562.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins. - U. 520.14 Udrome Irlandiae in Catherlagh Baronia, ca 1639, by Gerard Mercator / J. Hondius, Amsterdam

 

The map depicts present day County Carlow in Leinster Province and Catherlaugh which is now Carlow.  The title is surrounded by a strapwork design cartouche topped with a caliper and a distance scale.  Noted in the lower right corner “Per Gerardum Mercatorem Cum Privilegio” identifying the work.  The map is from Mercator’s atlas Cosmographicae.  In 1604 Jodocus Hondius bought the printing plates from the Mercator family and with his son Jodocus II and Henricus, published the enlarged editions of the Mercator atlas of which this map is one of the plates.  The Mercator atlas dominated the map publishing market for the next thirty years.  The map is rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with no apparent flaws; printed on heavy paper with very wide margins, text on the verso and in original color.  It measures approximately (13.5" x 11.1"  - 278 x 344 mm).      $ 350.     ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.)           Sale Price:  $290

520.15   Tabula Novissima Accuratissima Regnorum Anglia Scotiae Hiberniae .. [Great Britain], ca 1730, by Matthew Seutter, Augsburg

 

A beautiful example of an 18th century map of the British Isles.  The detailed title cartouche features a portrait of King George I, flanked by figures, at the lower portion is  the coat-of-arms of the House of Hanover.  Further embellishments include in the upper left the shields of England, Scotland, and Ireland.  At the lower left are scales that include the Royal coat-of-arms, unicorn, and a gallant knight.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page].  Japanese paper has been added to the blank verso at the folds with no apparent flaws noted.  The map measures approximately ( 22.7" x 19.4"  -  55.4  x  43.5  cm).   $1,850.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)     Sale Price:  $980

520.16 Regna Daniae Accuratissima Delineatio, ca 1665, by J. Janssonius, Netherlands

 

A beautiful and decorative map of Denmark and southern Sweden.  There is an elaborate title cartouche, distance scale, as well as a coat-of-arms, compass rose, sailing ships with elegant calligraphy.  The title is flanked by two Danes and putti with the distance scale in typical 17th century format.  There is Latin text on the verso.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with no apparent flaws other than the borders have been professionally extended to accommodate framing and restoration of the lower right neatline       (3 cm).  The map measures approximately (22.0" x 18.1"  - 55.9 x 45.9 cm).    $875.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.)        

520.17        Partie Septentrionale de la Russie Europeene, c1778, by Robert de Vaugondy, Paris

 

From the Nouvel Atlas published by Fortin, the map is printed on heavy paper in original outline color.  Rated Excellent (see our rating criteria on the Home Page) no apparent flaws and measures about  (9.5" x 11.5"  - 24 x 29 cm).      $190.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins)  

520.18 Novissima et Accuratissima Totius Angliae, SCOTIAE et Hiberniae Tabula .............., c1685, by Theodore Danckerts, Amsterdam

 

Original color, the map covers England and Scotland and the environs with a beautiful title cartouche that features the shields of Scotland, Ireland and England held by putti.  From the atlas Regni Scicilae et Insulae Maltae et Gozoe - 1695.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with top and bottom margins cut close to the neatline and some toning of the paper noted.  It measures approximately (19.5" x 22.5"  - 50 x 57 cm).   $950.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)    Sale Price:  $470

520.19 Chorographia Bavariae, ca 1579, [ Philipp Apianus, Basel] 24 sheet, by Peter Weiner, Munich

 

Philipp Apianus was a German cartographer, mathematician and physician.  He was the son of Peter Apianus.  His most famous work was his survey of Bavaria on which he worked from 1554 - 1561.  Aide by his brother, Thimoteus, and the painter / artist Bartholomaus Refinger the very large and detailed  map  Beschreibung des Furstenthums Ober und Nieder Bairn, was published in 1563 and was destroyed in 1782.   A forty sheet version was produced in 1756; that too was destroyed during WW II.  There were, however,  two smaller 24 sheet versions made in 1568 / 1579.  These wood block engravings  by Jost Amman and the later by Peter Weiner, Munich have most of the detail Apianus had in the large map.  This scarce very rare copy of the Munich printing was found by an American soldier during WW II and until recently had been kept by the family.  The map is clothed backed with a strong impression and rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page]; no apparent flaws other than normal age toning.  Each of the twenty-four map sections measure approximately (12.5" x 16.3"  - 31.5  x  41 cm) .    $5,800.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins - foreign postage addnl.) 

520.20 The Dominions of Moscovy or Russia, c1730, by Herman Moll, London

 

An interesting map of Imperial Russia in the later part of the 18th century.  Published in black / white, the map is rated Very Good with only normal age toning noted and measures approximately ( 7.0" x 10.0"  - 18 x 25 cm).    $225.   ($ 6.50 shipping / handling / ins. - U. S.)    

520.21    Frugiferi ac ameni Herefordiae Comitatus qui olim pars suit Silurum delineatio, c1607, by Christopher Saxton, London

 

Christopher Saxton became known as the “father of English cartography”.  During his career he carried out extensive surveys of England and Wales between 1573 and 1578.  This map of the Hereford area is typical of Saxton’s style with tress, mountains, and towns depicted.  The enchantingly-named Gilden Vale is shown in the southwestern portion of the map. A detailed title cartouche and the coat-of-arms of England is depicted in the upper right corner.  It is believed that this map was published by the son Robert Saxton after his fathers death in 1610.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with some loss of paper noted in the upper left of the margin and repairs made thereto; not affecting the map.  The map measures approximately (12.3" x 11.3"  - 31.3 x 28.6 cm).   $290.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

520.23 Magnae Britanniae Pars Septentrionalis qua Regnum Scotiae...., ca 1720 by Johnann Baptist Homann, Nuremberg

 

A beautiful example of Homann’s maps. The map includes the Orkney and Hebrides islands.  The issue is believed to be based on Visscher’s earlier publication.  Great detail is provided for towns, cities, schools, and other prominent topographic features.  In full original color the title and distance scale cartouches have great embellishments to include the royal coat-of-arms of both Scotland and Britain.  The title cartouche is flanked by the mythical figure of Mercury and Ceres.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with only slight age toning along the centerfold and measures approximately ( 18.9" x 22.4"  - 48.0 x 59.9 cm).       $725.     ( $10.50 shipping / handling ins - foreign postage addnl.)   New Item

A fine example of Van Keulen’s Sea Chart covering St. George’s Channel with the coasts of Ireland and England shown.  Coastal place names and rhumb lines, sailing ships and compass rose complete the features portrayed.  A decorative title cartouche depicts a boy and two dogs.  The Map is centered on the Isle of Man located some 80 miles from Liverpool and 90 miles from Belfast.  The island is noted for its dog population and breeding.  In original hand color, the chart is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] printed on heavy paper with good margins, the map measures approximately (25.7" x 21.1"   -   70.4 x 53 cm).   $940.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.)    New Item

The Homann family became the most important publishers of atlases in Germany during the 18th century.  This map, in original color, of Brabant shows the regions of Louvain, Brussels, Antwerp, Hertogenbosch and Breda.  A detailed title cartouche completes the map which is rated Excellent, with no apparent flaws, printed on heavy paper, and measures approximately (22" x 19.1" - 58.0 x 48.5 cm)        $190.  ($10.50 shipping /handling/ ins.)      

520.30 A New & Accurate Map of the Netherlands or Low Countries ...., c1746, by Emanuel Bowen, London

 

A very detailed copperplate engraving of the Low Countries with good detail of the towns, roads and waterways.  Indicated are the Barrier Towns as designated by the Barrier Treaty of 1715.  A  detailed title cartouche featuring soldiers and weaponry completes the map which has later color.  The map is rated Very Good (see our rating criteria on the Home Page) with no apparent flaws noted.  It measures approximately (17.2" x 14.1").     $380.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

The map shows the river system of Germany and its neighboring areas.  Taken form the Grosser Atlas, the map has two very detailed cartouche embellishments and shows a portion of the North Sea.  It’s condition is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with only two small wax spots noted in the lower cartouche and printed on heavy paper.  The map measures approximately  (19.1"  x  22.8"   -   48.5 x    57.8 cm)  $390.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.)

521.03 De Bello Belgico Decas Prima Famian Stradae Rom. Soc. Lesu Edition III, ca 1648, by Famiano Strada, Italy

 

One of the most interesting of the cartographic oddities is Strada’s map of the Netherlands and Belgium in the shape of a lion.  Strada was a teacher at the Collegium Romanum , Rome and author of a book on the Dutch War of Independence (De Bello Belgico) 1632, when first published it contained the Leo Belgicus [map of Belgium in the form of a lion].  The second part of the book was published in 1647; two other editions in 1651.  It was, however, only the Dutch and Latin editions that contained the Leo Belgicus as the title page.  The map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with no apparent flaws noted on this small map measuring approximately (3.8" x 5.7"  - 9.7 x 14.5 cm).     $900.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.)       Sale Price:  $900

First published in Vol. I of Le Theatare du Monde ou Nouvel Atlas contenant les chartes et descriptions de tous les Pais de la terre, Mis en lumiere Par Guillaume et Jean Blaeu .... 1638.  The map of Frankfurt and its environs is surrounded by a magnificent border of allegorical figures and 35 coats of arms of the Frankfurt magistrates.  This is undoubtably the most elaborate of the maps in the Blaeu atlas.  The map measures approximately (21.7" x 17.9" - 55.0 x 45.5 cm) and is rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page].  Plate # 109, blank on the verso.        $2300.  ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)      Sale Price:  $1980

An unusual map by De L’Isle of Europe with an insert of Nova Zembla and text within the title cartouche by Buache that is dated 1724.  Philippe Buache was one of the most active proponents of the school of theoretical cartography during the mid 18th century.  In original colors, the map is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with a good dark impression and only minor water stains in the margin, not affecting the map which measures approximately (19.5" x  24.2") accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.  $325.   ($10.50 shipping / handling ins.)

A bright and very attractive map of the northeast coast of Germany, showing Lubeck and  farther down the left side is Lauenburg.  In the upper right corner of the map is Rugen.  At the bottom center is Wittenberg and in the lower right is Strasburg.  A very detailed title cartouche decorated with cherubs at the top center of the map and sailing ships complete this beautiful map by Homann.  The map is rated Excellent with no apparent flaws in bright original color.  It measures approximately (22.8" x 19.4"  - 58.0 x 49.3 cm)       $386.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

An attractive map of the northwestern sections of France including the towns of Calais and Gravelines.
