Des Nouvelles Decouvertes au Nord de la Mer du Sud, Tant a l’Est
de la Siberie et du Kamtchatka, Qua l’Ouest de la Nouvelle
France, c1770, by Paolo Santini, Venice
 |
Santini’s map
was taken from Joseph- Nicolas De L’Ile’s and Philippe
Buache’s map of the Northern Pacific Ocean; to include
North America and Asia - 1752. Shown on the map were the
Russian discoveries and the de Forte voyage, both of which
were criticized for incorrectly representing Vitus Bering’s
voyage as well as not showing de Forte’s text when depicting
the voyage. Illustrating the northwest coast of America (
mostly based on myth); the information portrayed never the
less dominated regional cartography for many decades until
Cook’s voyages. The map is rated Excellent (see our rating
criteria on the Home Page) with no apparent flaws and a
strong and dark later color impression. The map measures
approximately (25.3" x 18.5"). $2400. ($10.50
shipping / handling / ins.)
