Chorographia Bavariae, ca 1579, [ Philipp Apianus, Basel] 24 sheet,
by Peter Weiner, Munich
 |
Philipp
Apianus was a German cartographer, mathematician and
physician. He was the son of Peter Apianus. His most
famous work was his survey of Bavaria on which he worked
from 1554 - 1561. Aide by his brother, Thimoteus, and the
painter / artist Bartholomaus Refinger the very large and
detailed map Beschreibung des Furstenthums Ober und
Nieder Bairn, was published in 1563 and was
destroyed in 1782. A forty sheet version was produced in
1756; that too was destroyed during WW II. There were,
however, two smaller 24 sheet versions made in 1568 /
1579. These wood block engravings by Jost Amman and the
later by Peter Weiner, Munich have most of the detail
Apianus had in the large map. This scarce very rare
copy of the Munich printing was found by an American soldier
during WW II and until recently had been kept by the
family. The map is clothed backed with a strong impression
and rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home
Page]; no apparent flaws other than normal age toning. Each
of the twenty-four map sections measure approximately (12.5"
x 16.3" - 31.5 x 41 cm) . $5,800. ($10.50
shipping / handling / ins - foreign postage addnl.) |
