800.18 “The Map of China”,
c1625, by Samuel Purchas, London
 |
This is the
earliest known map of China published in Europe from Chinese
sources. From Purchas’ Hakluytus Posthumus [Purchas
His Pilgrimes, III, ii 401, London 1625]. Purchas writes, “
the original map, hence this present was taken and
contracted, was by Captain Saris... gotten at Bantam of a
Chinese ...”. The map is embellished with several
figures: “Matheus Ricius” (Jesuit father, Matteo Ricci) at
left; an image of a Chinese man in costume, lower left and a
Chinese woman, lower right. This very rare and important
map of China is purportedly based on a hand drawn map
captured by Capt. Saris in Bantam (now Indonesia). The map
is believed to have been taken from the Chinese drawing
that was drawn in 1593 Cao Map, of which there is
only one known recorded copy. In the Purchas map the
province boundaries are shown, perhaps for the first time on
a Western map. The map is rated Excellent, with no
apparent flaws, the verso is blank and measures
approximately (14.5" x 11/5" - 36.9 x 29.3 cm) in black and
white. $6230. ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.) |
