A striking woodblock engraving of a medieval battle scene contained on a full sheet of Latin text.  The image measures (3.0" x 2.9") text the verso.  In original hand coloring the overall size of the  leaf is approximately (9.2" x 14.5"  - 22.9 x 36.9 cm). 22.17 Ptolemy's Atlas - page, c1525, Strassburg, Austria

 

The text leaf is from the Strassburg edition of Ptolemy's atlas edited by Laurent Fries.  On the recto and verso is an introduction with each page and a 6-line initial.  The woodcut page has a title header with two figures holding instruments .... recto header GEOGRAPHIAE LIB - VII. 22.18 Drewry’s Derby Mercury Newspaper, November 1, 1776 by Thomas Pownall, London

 

A newspaper with stories of the beginning of the American Revolution dated October 25th to November 1st of the year 1776.  This rare 4 page newspaper shows the buildup of British troops on Long Island as the English prepared to engage General Washington and the Continental Army.  Included is a map illustrating the location of the region with an inscription “as many of the Readers of this paper may not have maps, and must therefore be unacquainted with the situation of the Army on LONG ISLAND, and it contiguity to the TOWN and ISLAND of NEW YORK, we here present them with a MAP of those Places, copied obligingly favoured by Mr. GREGORY of Leicester”.   The newspaper’s condition is rated Very Good and show a red stamp of the papers price of  Two pence Half - penny located in the lower right corner.  The map measures approximately (5.5 x 3.8"  - 14.0 x 9.7 cm).    $240.  ($12. shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.)

22.19 The Truants, by William R. Bigg (1755-1828), June 1801, London

 

“The Truants”, published as the act directs, June 1, 1801 Gate Street Fields was engraved by W. 22.27 Von der Statt Avinion, c1560, by Sebastian Munster, Basel

22.28     Landing op het eiland Tanna, een van de Nieuwe Hebriden,  ca 1795 by Capt. James Cook, Leiden

 

Captain James Cook (1728 - 79), explorer circumnavigated the earth during three voyages, 1768-71, 1772-75 and 1776-79.  From 1778 on printed editions of Captain Cook's Travels appeared in English, Italian, French and Dutch editions.  This print depicts a landing party at one of the islands of the New Hebrides, from the Dutch edition.  The print is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] a strong impression , folded as issued with narrow margins but adequate for framing.  It measures approximately (8.0" x 17.7"  - 20.4 x 45.0 cm).  $230.   ($12. shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.)

22.29 Surprise des INDIENS de la Guadeloupe ...., c1722, by J. F. Bernard, Amsterdam

 

An unusual print depicting the arrival of Europeans in Guadeloupe.  Taken from the publication Nouvelle Relation, Contenant Les Voyages de Thomas Gage dans la nouvelle Espagne [..] jusqu'a la Havane.  First published by Paul Marret the print is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] and measures approximately (5.1" x 6.7"  - 13.0 x 16.9 cm).           $80.   ($12. shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.)

22.30 Navajos, U.S. Pacific Railroad Explorations and Surveys, c 1855, U.S. Government Print Office, Washington, D.C.
 

 

The drive to build a transcontinental railroad was complicated by the importance of where geographically to build it.  The political and business interests stalled the project for many years.  Finally, in 1853-54 Senator Gwin of California got an appropriation into the War Department budget to allow the Secretary of War (then Jefferson Davis) to send a survey party into the territory.  The results of this effort produced a twelve volume 'Reports of Exploration and Surveys' ...... A detailed and interesting sketch by W.A. 22.33    Durer, Heilge Familie in Nazareth - Mesiterbilder, Herausgeben vom Kunstwart, Blatt 76, ca 1903, by Albrecht Durer, Nuremberg

 

 A fine chromolithographic print the Holy Family in Nazareth.  Albrecht Durer (1471 - 1528) was a German painter, printmaker, engraver, and mathematician.  His prints were well recognized throughout Europe while he was still in his twenties.  This print from a copperplate impression is on laid paper with the German print shops stamp visible on the verso.  The print is rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with no apparent flaws other than normal age toning.  It measures approximately (10 3/4" x 14 5/8"  - 27 x 36.5 cm).    $123   ($12. shipping / handling / ins. - foreign postage addnl.)

23.2 Panoramic Photograph of the Great San Francisco Fire, c1906

 

This rare print of the panoramic photograph by George Lawrence of the great San Francisco fire and earthquake of April 19, 1906 is a true collectors item. The print includes naming of prominent structures such as the Union Trust Building and the Occidental Hotel.
