21.00     Mexico, Regia et Celebris Hispaniae Novae Civitas [and] Cusco, Peru in Novo Orbe Caput, c1572, by Braun & Hogenberg, Cologne

 

From Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg’s magnificent city atlas, Civitates Orbis Terrarum  published in six sections between 1572 and 1617.  This print has two images on one sheet.  First is Mexico City with a detailed image of the city plan, the center of Aztec culture.  The second is of Cusco, Peru depicting the Inca city at the time of conquest.  Fine detail and rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page], measuring approximately 9.5" x 10.5" each print with an overall size of 10.5" x 18.5".      $2,300.  ($10.50 shipping / handling /  ins.)

22.01 16th Century battle scene , c1570, by Sebastian Munster, Basel

 

A striking woodblock engraving of a medieval battle scene contained on a full sheet of Latin text.  The image measures (3.0" x 2.9") text the verso.  In original hand coloring the overall size of the  leaf is approximately (9.2" x 14.5"  - 22.9 x 36.9 cm). 22.02 Dragons and Other Animals, c1570, by Sebastian Munster, Basel

 

Woodblock print of the 16th century illustrating a Shepard with his flock attacked by a dragon.  The print, in original hand coloring , measures (4.3" x 2.9") with text on verso and the overall size of the leaf is (9.2" x 14.5" - 22.9 x 36.9 cm).  The engraving is rated Very Good.           $102.     ($5.50 shipping / handling / ins.)      

22.06 Coat of Arms, Nobleman, Camel and Others, c1570, by Sebastian Munster, Basel

 

Woodblock print of the 16th century illustrating subjects that include a royal crown, tree, nobleman, camel and indigenous native.  The print, in original hand coloring , measures [with text on verso] approximately (9.2" x 14.5" - 22.9 x 36.9 cm).  The engraving is rated Very Good (see our rating criteria on the Home Page).    $102.     ($5.50 shipping / handling / ins.)        

22.12        Tiena, Brabantiae .... ( Belgium), c1580  by Braun & Hogenberg, Cologne

 

A birds-eye view of the city of Tienen from the Civitates Orbis Terrarum [Cities of the World] first published in 1572 with six volumes until 1617.  Some 531 towns and cities were depicted on 363 plates.  Braun and the engraver, Hogenberg incorporated an amazing amount of information into each scene that included buildings and the dress of the day in figures that embellished the maps.  This print is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with only several worm holes in the margins that have been professionally repaired.  The map measures approximately (16.1" x 13.0"  - 40.7 x 33.1 cm).      $350.  ($10.50 shipping U.S. / handling / ins)       

22.14 Cestria Vulgo Chester, Angliae Civitas, c1588, by G. Braun & F. Hogenberg, Cologne

 

One of Braun and Hogenberg’s most beautiful engravings.  The print depicts the city of Chester, England situated on the banks of the River Dea.  Based on the survey by William Smith, the birds-eye plan shows the prominent Norman castle, walled defenses and central cathedral.  The original Roman Legion settlement of Deva is evident at the heart of the city.  An elegant title cartouche, coats-of-arms, and gentlemen in the dress of the day as well as livestock grazing, complete the print.  A dark clean impression the print is rated Excellent [see out rating criteria on the Home Page] with a small tear to the lower center outside the neatline that  has been repaired. 22.15     St. Francisco de Campeche .... [Mexico], 1729, by Pieter van der Aa, Leiden

 

A rare copy of van der Aa’s village scene of the harbor  of St. Francisco in the Bay of Campeche, the Yucatan Peninsular taken from his La Galerie Ageable du Monde, published in sixty-six volumes in 1729.  The print is in Excellent condition [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with wide margins and strong original colors and measures approximately (11.5" x  14.3") accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity inscribed with the purchaser’s name / country.  $310.    ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

22.16     London, nach dem Panorama gezeichnet [City of London] , 1850,  Anonymous, Frankfurt

22.17 Ptolemy’s Atlas - page, c1525, Strassburg, Austria

 

The text leaf is from the Strassburg edition of Ptolemy’s atlas edited by Laurent Fries.  On the recto and verso is an introduction with each page and a 6-line initial.  The woodcut page has a title header with two figures holding instruments .... recto header GEOGRAPHIAE LIB - VII. And the verso header CLAUDII  PTOLEMAIE.  The print is in Very Good condition [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with only normal age toning noted and measures approximately (8.4" x 13.5").            $125.   ($8.50 shipping / handling / ins.)           

22.18   City of Roan, France, c1575, by George Braum / Frans Hogenberg, Cologne

 

A detailed panoramic view of Roan, France giving great detail of the buildings and countryside from the joint publication by Braum / Hogenberg the Civitates Orbis Terrarum 1572- 90.  The publication reflects the vast amount of information Braum collected for over 500 European city plans / views / maps published in six volumes between 1572 and 1617.  Most of the engravings were made by Simon Novellanus and Frans Hogenberg.  The print is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with the print cut close to the neatline and measures approximately (5.1" x 18.8") accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.    $350.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

22.19       Magdeburgum a Venere qvae ....... Metropolitica Saxomiae vrbs..., 1580, by Braun & Hogenberg, Cologne

 

Panoramic view of Maagdenburg, from his town book.  The print is from one of the greatest publications of it’s generation, Civitates Orbis Terrarum.  Written and complied by George Braun, Canon of Cologne Cathedral.  Braun gathered together vast amounts of information and draft plans to produce over 500 city views / maps published in six parts between 1572 and 1617.  Most of these engravings were accomplished by Simon Novellanus and Frans Hogenberg; many after drawings by Joris Hoefnagel.  The print is rated Very Good with no apparent flaws uncolored and measures approximately (12.5" x 18.6").        $370 ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

22.20     Westminster Bridge, c1750, by G. B. Probst, Augsburg

 

A very decorative and rare print of London with a view of the Westminister Bridge.  St Paul’s Church is clearly visible in the left portion of the print as well as other prominent buildings of the time.  This is one of the “optical prints”.  Probst is one of the most recognized 18th century panoramic engravers.  His engravings are some of the most coveted for views of European capitals.  The prints caption is in English, French, German and Italian.   $210.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)   

22.21 Soest / Warborch, c1575, by George Braun / Frans Hogenberg, Cologne

 

Two views on one sheet of Soest and Warborch in northern Germany.  From one of the greatest publications of the 16th century; the Civitates was complied and written by George Braun who gathered vast amounts of information and then produced some 500 city plans, views and maps.  Braun, Canon of Cologne Cathedral,  produced his works in six parts between 1572 and 1617.  The engravings were accomplished by Simon Novellanus and Frans Hogenberg, many from drawings by Joris Hoefnagel.  The print is rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] was no apparent flaws and measures approximately (13.1" x 18.5"  - 33.1 x 47.0 cm).    $595.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)  

22.22 Vue particulierie de Paris, c1868, by I. Rigaud, Paris

 

A view of the Seine with the Royal boating party and the Louvre in the background, n  from the Le Suffrage Universal, engraved by Leiitzelt.  The print, in original color,  is rated Good with loss of the upper right margin, not affecting the image; that has been reenforced with Japanese paper extending from the prints right side.  The print measures approximately (12.1" x 17.3").          $110.  ($10.50 Shipping / Handling / Ins.)

22.23 Eon Amerikaan stort wit eenen vollen haren de vrugten der Nieuwe Weereld, c1765, by Isaak Tirion, Amsterdam

 

The frontispiece of Tirion’s features Europa and America seated around a globe with two cherubs in a landscape setting. The print is rated Very Good with only minor age toning [see our rating criteria on the Home Page], in black / white the print measures approximately (4.1" x 6.2") with Dutch text.     $70. 22.24 Marche’ Coton, Plate IX, c1779, by Denis Diderot, Paris

 

The page was taken from Diderot’s Encyclopedie Engraved by Laurent, this was a very important work as it gave an inventory of 18th century science and craftsmanship just before the Industrial Revolution.  The plate is rated Very Good, in original color and measures  approximately         (7.9" x 5.9" - 20.0 x 15.0 cm).    $60.  ($5.50 shipping / handling / ins)   

22.26 Salin die namhaffte Statt in Burgund, c1560, by Sebastian Munster, Basel

 

A double-page woodblock print engraved by Rudolf Manuel Deutsch for Munster’s Cosmographia.  Depicted is the medieval city of Salin-les-Bains with the castle Belim atop the hill.  Deutsch’s initials are seen in the engraving lower left.  A coat-of-arms is visible in the upper right.  The print is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the home Page] with only minor foxing noted for a print over four hundred years old.  The print measures approximately (15.2" x 9.5").    $180. 22.27 Von der Statt Avinion, c1560, by Sebastian Munster, Basel

 

A small but interesting print of Avignon, France that shows the city with its churches, step les and gates.  From Munster’s Cosomographia the hand colored woodblock print is rated Very Good with only minor foxing and measures approximately (5.1" x 3.4").    $160. 22.29 Surprise des INDIENS de la Guadeloupe ...., c1722, by J. F. Bernard, Amsterdam

 

An unusual print depicting the arrival of Europeans in Guadeloupe.  Taken from the publication Nouvelle Relation, Contenant Les Voyages de Thomas Gage dans la nouvelle Espagne [..] jusqu’a la Havane.  First published by Paul Marret the print is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] and measures approximately (5.1" x 6.7"  - 13.0 x 16.9 cm).           $80.  ($10.50 shipping / handling /ins.)          

22.30 Navajos, U.S. Pacific Railroad Explorations and Surveys, c 1855, U.S. Government Print Office, Washington, D.C.
 

 

The drive to build a transcontinental railroad was complicated by the importance of where geographically to build it.  The political and business interests stalled the project for many years.  Finally, in 1853-54 Senator Gwin of California got an appropriation into the War Department budget to allow the Secretary of War (then Jefferson Davis) to send a survey party into the territory.  The results of this effort produced a twelve volume “Reports of Exploration and Surveys” ...... “to ascertain the most practicable and economical route for the railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean”.  The print offered here is from volume III - “ the 35th parallel route with the Ethnographic report”.  The print is on heavy paper in original color and rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] measuring approximately (7.5" x 9.5")     $135.  ($10.50 Shipping / Handling / Ins.)

22.37             St. Louis from the Mississippi River, c1870, by Harper’s Weekly Supplement, New York, New York

 

A finely engraved wood block print in color with two views of the city.  One view is looking north and the other from the levee at the bridge.  The drawings are by Charles Graham and signed in the engraving, with very detailed depictions of the wharf and steamboat traffic on the river.  The print is rated Very Good with some staining noted on the left margin protruding into the top print by 1 cm. and measuring approximately (9.5" x 14.1") offered matted ready for framing.  $110.     ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

22.43     De Leydtze Poort  [the gate to Amsterdam, Netherlands], c1690,  by Isaac Commelin, Amsterdam

23.2 Panoramic Photograph of the Great San Francisco Fire, c1906

 

This rare print of the panoramic photograph by George Lawrence of the great San Francisco fire and earthquake of April 19, 1906 is a true collectors item. The print includes naming of prominent structures such as the Union Trust Building and the Occidental Hotel. This copy was made in the late 1930's and measures 14.0" x 3.5", in good condition and mounted on back board.    $115.    ($10.50 shipping/handling/ins.)  

24.11  The Graphic: Arctic Supplement - The Arctic Expedition, 1875, London
 

 

An interesting wood-engraving from The Graphic, weekly illustrated newspaper published during the late 19th century in London.  Depicted is the officer of the watch inquiring as to the temperature of the sea water aboard the HMS ALERT near Holsteinborg, Greenland,    September 11, 1875.  The print is rated Very Good (see rating criteria on the Home Page) and measures approximately (12.4" x 16.7") with verso text, accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity inscribed with the name and country of the purchaser.   $46.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)
