Orbis Terrarum [Cities of the World] first published in
1572 with six volumes until 1617. Some 531 towns and cities
were depicted on 363 plates. Braun and the engraver,

each scene that included buildings and the dress of the day
in figures that embellished the maps. This print is rated

Hogenberg’s most beautiful engravings. The print depicts
the city of Chester, England situated on the banks of the
River Dea. Based on the survey by William Smith, the
birds-eye plan shows the prominent Norman castle, walled
defenses and central cathedral. The original Roman Legion
settlement of Deva is evident at the heart of the
city. An elegant title cartouche, coats-of-arms, and
gentlemen in the dress of the day as well as livestock
grazing, complete the print. A dark clean impression the

decorative and rare print of London with a view of the
Westminister Bridge. St Paul’s Church is clearly visible in
the left portion of the print as well as other prominent
buildings of the time. This is one of the “optical prints”.
Probst is one of the most recognized 18th century
panoramic engravers. His engravings are some of the most

sheet of Soest and Warborch in northern Germany. From one
of the greatest publications of the 16th century;
the Civitates was complied and written by George

between 1572 and 1617. The engravings were accomplished by
