11.00 Prints of the Federal City, ca 1856
Represented in these masterfully engraved prints are 13 of the most
interesting landmarks of Washington, D.C. as envisioned in 1856.
Many of the engravings represent original designs for buildings /
monuments that never became a reality. An example is the Washington
Monument identified in th print. as the “National Monument”. It was
the design of Robert Mills of South Carolina, a protegee of Thomas
Jefferson. Mills was the first native born American architect. The
prints are direct re-strikes from the copperplate engravings of
Albert Bosche’s Map of the City of Washington - Seat of the
Federal Government, dated 1857. The prints measures
approximately (5.0" x 6.0" - 12.3 x 15.1 cm). Within the margin of
each print is inscribed entered according to an Act of Congress
in the year 1856 in the Clerks Office of the District of Columbia.

handling / ins - foreign postage addnl). |
