Rembrandt Prints

66.00 Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn - Prints (1606-1669)

Dutch painter and etcher, Rembrandt, was born in Leyden, July 15, 1606. The art of etching is one element of his remarkable career that is not as well known as his famous paintings. The skill of etching an image into metal is one of exact dimensions and one that Rembrandt mastered with great success. There were many etchings by him that have been reworked or altered in some way to improve the image. They have excited both collectors and students of the arts for many decades. The prices which they fetch at auction or at private sales are enormous. The number of impressions taken from each etching plate is limited due to the nature of the soft metal to ware on the incised lines of each. Cartographic Associates has been able to obtain a very small number of copperplate re-strikes taken from plates made by the Rembrandt House in Amsterdam. This process known as “photogravure” transfers images directly from the original engraving plates onto new engraved copperplates. While not taken directly from the original plates, the re-strikes from these plates duplicate in every manner the original etchings, both in design [print-plate marks] and in the texture and raised engraved lines.

White and Boon, also known as Hollstein is perhaps the best classification system of the Rembrandt etchings. The numbers that appear with each etching we offer are from the Bartsch cataloging inventory utilizing the Hollstein numbering system. Listed below are ones available, each offered in a beautifully styled European heavy ornate frame with linen and ceramic matte complimenting the heavy wood ornamentation. Magnificent to view each print comes with a Certificate of Authenticity inscribed with the owners name and country indicating the original origin and reproduction method.
