520.44 - Marine - Pavillons , Encyclopedie, 1778, by Denis Diderot, Paris


A beautiful copperplate engraving containing 28 colorful marine flags, many decorated with coats of arms.  Engraved by Benard.  The Encyclopedie was published under the direction of Diderot from 1751 forward, with thousands of articles written by many of the leading philosophers and scientist of the time.  The publication contained some 72,000 articles written by more than 140 contributors.  The flag plate includes the English Crown and most of the naval and command flags of the late 18th century.  The print is a crisp impression with light offsetting and toning noted along the centerfold and edges.  The print is rated Very Good [see our rating on the home Page].  It measures approximately (12.8″ x 7.6″ – 32.6 x 19.3 cm).
