800.15 - Iaponia, 1595 (ca 1897), by Mercator / Hondius , Amsterdam

$365.00

One of the earliest maps of Japan, and found in the atlases of Hondius, Mercator, and Jansson; this is a late 19th century reproduction of the famous map.  Skillfully copied, the litho print is printed on heavy paper and conforms to the measurements of the original.  Plate impression marks are visible.  Noted in the original, there was a lack of color whereas this print is profusely colored.  There are two strapwork cartouches.  The title at top shows within the title block the date AD 1595.  Later printings by Hondius have excluded the date.   Other features shown include a sea monster and a Chinese Junk.  The map is rated Excellent with no apparent flaws other than normal soiling, on laid paper.  It measures approximately  (17.5″  x  13.5″ – 44.5 x 34.1 cm) with wide margins.
