22.03         Tombeaux de la Baie de Castries, c1797, by Jean-Francois Galoup (Comte La Perouse), Paris

This is a copperplate engraving of the French scientific expedition commanded by Jean-Francois de Galaup to the Pacific in 1785-88.  Recognized as one of Frances’ foremost naval officers, he was selected by King Louis XVI to complete the efforts of Captain James Cook’s explorations of the western Pacific.  La Perouse explored the coasts of the Gulf of Alaska and northwestern North America in search of the fabled route across North America (Northwest Passage) that would connect the Atlantic to the Pacific coast.  After Leaving America his expedition continued on to Asia where he explored the region from Kamchatka to Macao and the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific.  The expedition vanished after leaving Botany Bay, Australia in 1788.  This print shows the French encampment at Kamchatka.  The print measures approximately (16.1" x 10.2") and is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with only slight foxing noted in the upper left corner.  The print is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity inscribed with the purchasers name.  $60.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / insurance)

22.04       Vue de St. Pierre et St. Paul au Kamtschatka, c1797, by Jean-Francois Galoup (Comte La Perouse), Paris

Copperplate engraving of the French expedition to the Pacific under the command of Jean-Francois de Galoup in 1785-88.  A view of the village and natives of St. Paul at Kamchatka.  The print measures approximately (16.1" x 10.2") and is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page].  The print is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity inscribed with the purchasers name.       $60.    ($10.50 shipping / handling / insurance)

22.07   Gezigt van ‘t Spaansche Vlek Pensacola aan de Baay van Dien Naam, in de Golf van Mexiko, Beoosten den Uitloop van de River Mississippi, c1769, by Isaac Tirion, Amsterdam

A rare copy of Tirion’s engraving of the Gulf coast at Pensacola depicting the village, fortifications, and sailing vessels in the foreground.  The print is from the Hedendaagsche Historie of Tegenwoordige Staat van Ameriks.  In original color, the print is rated Very Good with no apparent flaws other than normal age toning (see our rating criteria on the Home Page) and measures approximately (7.2" x 10.5").    $210.   ($10.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

The page was taken from Diderot’s EncyclopedieEngraved by Laurent, this was a very important work as it gave an inventory of 18th century science and craftsmanship just before the Industrial Revolution.  The plate is rated Very Good, in original color and measures approximately  (7.9" x 5.9" - 20.0 x 15.0 cm).        $60.  ($5.50 shipping / handling / ins)

The page was taken from Diderot’s Encyclopedie Engraved by Laurent, this was a very important work as it gave an inventory of 18th century science and craftsmanship just before the Industrial Revolution.  The plate is rated Very Good, in original color and measures  approximately    (7.9" x 5.9" - 20.0 x 15.0 cm).    $60.  ($5.50 shipping / handling / ins)            

22.10      The Arctic Supplement of the Graphic, 1875, London


A complete set of pages from the Graphic newspaper of the expedition of the H.M.S. VALAROUS, ALERT, and DISCOVERY in the year 1875.   There are five very detailed wood engravings of the expedition and includes a map of the locations explored dated July 17, 1875; with a complete text of the voyage.  The copy is rated Very Good with one tear at the centerfold of the front page not interfering with either the images or text.  The publication is uncolored, as issued and measures approximately (12.4" x 16.7") with a Certificate of Authenticity.  $ 130.         ($10.50 shipping/handling/ins.)

From the Dutch edition of Capt.  James Cooks’s exploits.  Captain James Cook (1728-79), explorer, hydrographer; circumnavigated the earth during his three voyages of discovery, 1768-71, 1772-75 and 1776-79.  From the year 1778 Cook’s voyages appeared in English, Italian, French, and Dutch.  This print, in color, is of Ulietca, one of the Society Islands.  It is rated Excellent [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with no apparent flaws and measures approximately (8.1" x 12.6"  - 20.5 x 32.0 cm) accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.     $120.  ($ 8.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

22.46     Eerste Boek [from the book America] , c1673 by Arnoldus Montanus  (Ogilby) Amsterdam

 

In 1670 John Ogilby published his America, based on the work  published by Arnoldus Montanus.  This publication offered the most complete cartographic record to date of both North and South America.  The publication was the most accurate compendium available of the New World.  This original print from that publication depicts Spanish explorers at counsel with a group of natives honoring them with a crown of feathers.  The print in black / white is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with only slight light foxing, not affecting the image.  Dutch text on the verso.   The print measures approximately (81.”  X 11.9") accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.       $105.   ($ 8.50 shipping / handling / ins.)

From the 1670 edition of John Ogilby’s America, the image is based on the work of Arnoldus Montanus.  The publication offered the most complete cartographic records to date of North and South America and was the most accurate compendium available of the New World.  The original print from that publication shows Brazilian natives dancing.  The print, in black / white; is rated Very Good [see our rating criteria on the Home Page] with only slight light foxing, not affecting the image.  Dutch text on the verso.  The print measures approximately (8.1" x 11.9") accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.   $105.  ($8.50 shipping / handling / ins.)
